Edwards and O'Neil are two of the initial candidates in the frame to succeed the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Pereira was dismissed on Sunday after the team's 10-match winless start to the top-flight campaign.

Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic associations to the club - are among the options to be considered by the Wolves leadership.

Edwards is currently at another club, which would create a potential obstacle to his appointment at Molineux.

However the ex- Luton Town manager - who made more than 100 of games for the club during his time as a player - is considered a strong candidate for the vacancy.

The 42-year-old is said to have support from the Wolves directors as they start the process of hiring a new head coach.

O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, although he would be a shock appointment given he was released by Wolves in December last year.

The ex- West Ham player is out of work meaning the club would not be required to pay any compensation.
